I / II · ABOUT THIS ARCHIVE

3 PIECES · 2013–2014

Three pieces from 2013 and 2014, kept here because the underlying mechanics — what is deductible, when filing season opens, how the Affordable Care Act intersects with a tax return — still come up in conversation. Tax law has moved on in the years since; the principles below are starting points, not current advice. For the up-to-date version, give me a call.

II / II · THE ARCHIVE

LATEST FIRST

  1. Affordable Care Act, in plain terms.

After a tumultuous beginning, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) became effective January 1, 2014. The health care act continues to be a source of confusion for many individuals and small businesses. The piece walks through who the mandate covers, who is exempt, when penalties apply, and how the premium assistance credit works for moderate-to-low-income households purchasing through the Marketplace.

  2. Tax filing season: three weeks behind.

Are you expecting a tax refund and want to file early to get it? Unfortunately, due to the government shutdown last October, the 2014 tax filing season will not open until January 31, 2014. The post explains the delay, why e-filing still beats paper, and confirms that the April 15th deadline remains unchanged.

  3. Year-end planning, charitable contributions.

As the year-end approaches, many are considering making donations to their favorite organizations. In order for those contributions to be tax-deductible, certain criteria must be met. The piece lists what counts, what does not, and the substantiation rules — bank records and written acknowledgement at the $250 threshold.
